Demi Moore’s full frontal scene in a new horror film has been called the ‘grossest thing you’ll see all year.’
Moore, 61, first gained fame on daytime TV before becoming a film star in the 80s. She’s known for movies like Ghost, Indecent Proposal, and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.
She’s also been in the spotlight for her high-profile marriages to Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher.
Now, everyone is buzzing about her latest role and one scene in particular…
On X, formerly known as Twitter, people are eager to see the film – with the trailer revealing very little.
One intrigued user writes: “Mindbending. This looks really good.”
Another adds: “So excited for this.”
“Something about the description of this movie combined with this brief cryptic trailer leads me to believe this will be a masterpiece,” someone else comments.
A fourth person says: “Omg, I need more.”
This week, the horror movie made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and, according to Deadline, was met with a 13-minute standing ovation, with Moore receiving much of the acclaim.
The narrative centers on a once-famous star, Elizabeth (played by Moore), who opts to try an illicit substance that allows her to conjure a younger version of herself, named Sue – portrayed by Margaret Qualley.
In a chilling sequence, both characters are shown without clothes as the younger clone tries to stitch together the back of Elizabeth.
The plot develops into a story reminiscent of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, delving into issues like ageism, the pursuit of beauty, and the intense societal pressures that prompt women to criticize themselves.
“The Substance,” directed by Coralie Fargeat, has garnered glowing critiques from film reviewers.
Esther Zuckerman of the Daily Beast mentions that although Moore appears ‘amazing’ in her nude scene, the film is still the ‘grossest thing you will see all year’.
She also advises: “Come prepared though. You might need a barf bag.”
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian characterizes it as a ‘grisly fantasy-parable of misogyny and body-objectification’.
Nicholas Barber, a BBC film critic, cautions moviegoers further: “Anyone with a fear of needles should avoid The Substance at all costs.”
“The Substance” boasts a Tomatometer rating of 93% and a score of 7.9 out of 10 on IMDb.
Moore has commented on the buzz surrounding her latest horror film.
At a press conference during the Cannes Film Festival, the 61-year-old stated (as reported by Mirror): “Going into it, it was really spelt out – the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story.”
“And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”
It has been announced that “The Substance” will be shown in theaters, though the exact release date remains unconfirmed.
